It is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a global resource<\/span> for Buddhism scholars and Buddhist students.<\/p>\n<p>2. The SD series is based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">themes<\/span> to sustain an interesting and connected reading. (SD 37 for example is based on Right Livelihood.)<\/p>\n<p>3.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Detailed notes<\/span> on difficult words, names, and doctrines; &amp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bibliographies<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>4. The Sutta\u2019s <em>peyyala<\/em> (repetitive cycles) (especially those on Dharma train\u00ading) are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">translat\u00aded in full<\/span>, for reflection by monastics and lay practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>5. The works are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">paragraphed, subtitled and numbered in a reader-friendly<\/span> way for easy reading in a scribal tradition (opposite of oral tradition).<\/p>\n<p>6. A high standard of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">referencing and cross-references<\/span> to other Suttas, essays, journal arti\u00adcles, etc, that are helpful to specialists and students, for discus\u00adsion or self-study.<\/p>\n<p>7.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> A broad-based translation<\/span> that uses alternative translations, amplified trans\u00adlations, and comparative studies with Sanskrit, Chinese and other texts where necessary.<\/p>\n<p>8. It includes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a digest<\/span> of the related and latest scholarly researches and writings, summar\u00adized, explain\u00aded and discussed.<\/p>\n<p>9. They serve as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">comprehensive sources and resources<\/span> for study and teach\u00ading notes for Dharma teach\u00aders, researchers and students.<\/p>\n<p>10. Easy-to-use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">handbook for monastics<\/span> (especially forest monks) and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">practi\u00adtioners<\/span> for Sutta readings (for recording on MP3 etc) and for meditation.<\/p>\n<p>11.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Socially-engaged studies and essays<\/span> to inspire social workers: it addresses various social and historical issues affecting Buddhism and religion.<\/p>\n<p>12.\u00a0 The SD texts are freely available online at our websites, <a href=\"http:\/\/dharmafarer.googlepages.com\/\">http:\/\/dharmafarer.googlepages.com<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/dharmafarer.org\">http:\/\/dharmafarer.org<\/a>, and also separately on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">USB drives<\/span>. The SD texts form the basis of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">an online Buddhist studies course<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>14.  The SD notes and studies are the materials for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">other reference projects<\/span> such as <em>Dictionary of the Buddha\u2019s Words, A Sutta Dictionary, A Dharma Dictionary<\/em>, <em>Numerical Dictionary of Dharma<\/em> and <em>Sutta Index<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>15.  The translated Suttas will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">published separately according to Nikaya<\/span>, that is, <em>The Long Texts, The Middle-length Texts, The Connected Texts<\/em> and <em>the Numerical Texts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>16.\u00a0 The SD series is inspired by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the Mere Buddhist vision<\/span>, simple Dharma-moved living that brings awake\u00adn\u00ading in this life itself.<\/p>\n<p>17.\u00a0 The SD series is the basis for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dharma-based reforms<\/span> in Buddhism today.<\/p>\n<p>18.\u00a0 It is a historical and practical guide to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">early Buddhist meditation<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>19.\u00a0 A helpful introduction to the study of key <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pali<\/span> terms and passages.<\/p>\n<p>20.\u00a0 An excellent and enduring <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">gift of the Dharma<\/span> to others.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">(2) A history of the Sutta Discovery series<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>started with the NUS Buddhist Society weekly Sutta Study Group (SSG) classes in February 2002 and<\/li>\n<li> the <strong>Buddhist Fellowship since February 2003 <\/strong>to date (Tuesdays).<\/li>\n<li>A new volume of translations and essays (A4 size, averaging 200 pages) is released every 3 months; SD 1 &amp; 2 available in book form.<\/li>\n<li>The SD Suttas are studied at TMC since 2006 (Wednesdays).<\/li>\n<li>By Sep 2012, Piya has completed at least 42 volumes of the Sutta Discovery. By 2030, over 100 SD volumes have been projected.
